Google News lagging

November 11, 2006 · Leave a Comment

(I meant to post this earlier)

It’s Thursday 7 pm as I write this. Google News still leads with a story about how Webb might take the Virginia Senate seat. Might? Allen conceded several hours ago yet Google’s algorithm for displaying news still feeds old stuff.

I’ve noticed this before, Google News fails at handling and displaying fast breaking news, especially when the breaking news on a specific person or event means previous news about it is obsolete and dated. It just keeps displaying the old news.

Of course, displaying only relevant news is complicated indeed for a news feed that is entirely done by computer algorithm. People are clearly needed too.
