Use comment timeout to kill spam comments

April 13, 2007 · Leave a Comment

My WordPress.org blog has been getting 1,000+ spam comments a day. Askimet blocks them from appearing, but they’re still a waste of time and system resources.

So, I just installed comment timeout from James McKay. It turns commenting off for posts over a user-definable number of days in the past or days without a comment, which ever comes first. It also checks against Askimet for spam coming from the same ip address.

After installing it, the blog is now getting just 40 spams a day. This works because the spambots that spew the comments try to put them into posts that are quite old, and this stops them from doing so.
